Learning to fly
Kaakkuri / Red-Throated diver/ Gavia stellata
When photographing red-throated divers, one can become quite attached to them, especially when closely observing their family life for a few weeks as the chicks learn to fly. Then, one day, noticing they have left the breeding pond, there's a sense of sadness. In this picture, a red-throated diver chick is learning to fly, but its wings aren't quite carrying it yet, and the flying practice ends in a spash landing.
